Duel's rendition of "Life Not Typical" - one of our favorite songs!
Add Comment While focusing on Egypt, Gretchen was very happy to dress for the occasion. Duel declined to join in. Apparently ancient Egyptian boys look to much like girls.:p Gretchen showing off her Egyptian princess pose. Gretchen showing off her Egyptian princess power. Gretchen showing off her Egyptian princess talent. While learning about pointillism we made our own... well, we tried to. Taking a blank outline of Seurats 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' we used crayons melted over a candle to make the dots. Pookie and Gretchen did this for a WEEK .... and it never was completly finished. Lets just say that the candle and crayon process is slooooow.... especially when the kids doing it are trying to make it look really nice. So, after a week we gave up on it and switched to paint and q-tips! This is Gretchens QUICK work of art.... Here is Duels....... So, Gretchen thought it'd be fun to teach the kids art. The subject was how to draw flowers. Things were going well..... Then she seemed to lose control of her class! Gretchen made lunch! Hotdog pizza..... sounds gross huh? It's actually really good! She did a great job! So, in science we learned about how the Egyptians mummified. The experiment was to take two peeled apples - put one in a mixture of baking soda and salt and leave the other one exposed. After a week or so we checked the progress........ An EWWWWW moment Then we left the mummifying apple in the mixture for a couple of weeks longer. The exposed apple we ditched.... it was already getting nasty. :) Gretchen demonstrating how the size of the apple had changed.... The final results... Daphne after being told "sure, you can eat it". Ha! In our home there are two points in the day that can make it or break it. First thing in the morning and dinner time. So, over the summer I mulled and mulled how to structure the morning time to be efficient and get us off to a good start. Especially since we're going to have a new addition to the family in six weeks.... routine HAS to be familiar and established. Monday morning is when it all came together! 6:30 - Wake up ( Get dressed, brush teeth, brush hair, make bed) 7:00- Breakfast and The Dig Bible study and boot up computers 7:30 - 45 minutes Time4Learning LA / Daphne 45 minutes ABCMouse 8:15- 45 minutes Time4Learning Math / Prairie 45 minutes ABCMouse 9:00 - 30 minute break and snack 9:30 - MOH , Science, Mis review 12:00- Lunch / Clean up / Free time 1:00- Prairie and Thaddeus nap time 1:15(ish) - ELectives / Tests/ Review work / Crafts / Reading / Free time 4:45- Dinner 5:00-Clean up and chores then free time 8:30- Family Bible study 9:00- Bedtime! Having the two major subjects out of the way by 9 am is sooooo freeing. The other subjects I feel more leeway with- we can deviate off topic as much as we want. Such as, a comment turns into something they want to look into. This week we've gone off topic to discover that Thomas Edison was more of a savvy ( and rather unethical ) businessman then a brilliant inventor. We looked into why the Mona Lisa doesn't have eyebrows or eyelashes ( she DID have them!). Fun stuff! So far, we've been doing pretty well with this and I don't foresee very much trouble getting it down pat. Over the next couple of weeks it should become a fairly easy habit and anything that isn't working out well - we'll tweak. :) The only actual hard part to this is actually getting everyone up at 6:30 ..... hard for me because it means a lotta hustling! Apparently getting four children to smile at the camera AND have their eyes open is NOT going to happen .... at least not without just ONE making a goofy face! |
